Flint — Cartoon Firefighter Figure, Fire Station Forecourt, Bergen, Norway

individual · Community-safety figure, custom cartoon firefighter · Bergen, Norway

A working fire station is a poor place to put anything breakable, and its forecourt is a poor place to put anything that people cannot touch.

The brief

The station wanted a reason for the public to stop rather than a leaflet: one figure outside the appliance bays that a child would run at and a parent would photograph. Cartoon, not realistic, and emphatically not a memorial — this is an active station, and a memorial figure in front of a working one would be the wrong sentence entirely.

The forecourt is a road

An appliance leaves that building at speed and the forecourt is its turning circle, so nothing may stand inside the swept path. The figure went against the station wall side of the bollard line, on a 150 mm cast base set into a planting bed. That base is deliberately low: no trip hazard for someone walking backwards with a camera, and no step. Pull-out and wind loads were calculated for the coastal site rather than assumed.

Reflective bands that are not reflective

The slowest detail to agree was the yellow banding. Real operational tunics carry retroreflective tape, and a figure wearing it would be read by a driver as highway furniture — something to slow down for. The bands here are flat lemon yellow with no reflective medium anywhere on them. It is high-visibility colour used as a graphic, not as safety equipment, and that distinction is written into the specification.

Being climbed on, for years

Every open day, small children in boots climb the boots and hang off the raised arm. Contact surfaces carry an extra 3 mm gel-coat layer, and every external edge is radiused to a minimum of 12 mm so nothing catches a sleeve. The raised hand is a closed cartoon mitt with no fingers to snap, and the hose coil is moulded into the body rather than being a separate ring, which is the part that would break off first.

On the forecourt

The station sits on a busy junction, so the piece also had to hold as a silhouette from fifty metres: one square stance, three large flat colour values and contour lines thick enough to read at distance, with no lettering anywhere on it. It stands between the bollard line and the station wall, angled so drivers meet it three-quarters on. The station’s own words are in the panel above.

We wanted people to stop at the station rather than drive past it. They stop. They stand next to it and take a photograph and then they talk to us.
