Skye — Cartoon Staffie Patio Sculpture, Manchester

Skye was a staffie with a brindle coat, a broad grin and a habit of sitting squarely in the middle of the patio as if she owned it. Her owners in Manchester wanted that exact attitude, at a size that could stay outside in the rain.

What they asked for

A cartoon version, not a lifelike one. The brief asked for the exaggerated staffie shape — the wide chest, the cropped ears, the grin — but with the brindle painted accurately, because that coat is how everyone recognised her. Roughly 1.5 m, seated, for a paved back patio.

Building it at full size

At 1.5 m the piece still carries a steel frame, though a lighter one than a 2 m build. We worked from four photographs, one of which was a clear side-on shot that gave us the chest depth and the set of the front legs.

The finish

The brindle is the part that matters. A tabby or a brindle cannot be reproduced by a metal patina, which is the single biggest reason we recommend fibreglass for cartoon work. It is hand-painted over a base coat and then sealed. Gloss finish, UV clear coat.

Installation

Bolted to a paving slab on the patio. Because it is fibreglass, two people can still move it — useful if the family ever moves house.

What it cost

Surveyed fibreglass ranges for 1.5–2.0 m run $1,500–$4,900. This piece came in at $2,900 delivered, seven weeks from 3D approval.
