Anders — Life-Size Cartoon Figure, Library Forecourt, Malmö

A public library in Malmö wanted something at the entrance that said come in rather than be quiet. A bronze figure was discussed and dropped: too formal, and too expensive to maintain outdoors.

What they asked for

A life-size cartoon figure at roughly 1.9 m, friendly and approachable, painted rather than metal. The library was explicit that it should invite contact rather than discourage it.

Building it at full size

Built over an engineered steel frame. Above 2 m that frame is drawn by a structural engineer; this piece sits just under, but it is still the part that decides whether a sculpture survives a Swedish winter. It typically accounts for 10–20% of the cost.

The finish

Gloss-painted fibreglass, hand-painted detail, UV clear coat. Paint was the deciding factor over metal: it keeps a bright, welcoming colour that a patina cannot hold, and it can be refreshed.

Installation

Set on a prepared concrete pad on the forecourt, bolted through, positioned off the main door line so it never blocks the entrance.

What it cost

Fibreglass at 1.5–2.0 m surveys at $1,500–$4,900; a detailed painted figure sits near the top of that band. This commission came in at $4,600 delivered and installed, ten weeks from 3D approval.
